Add a Little Sun to Your Life

Came back from a recent trip this week (have you seen my Frisco pics?) to discover a voicemail from my doctor’s office.
“Ms. Richardson, please call us about your test results from last week.”
What? It was my annual physical and they’ve NEVER called about my results before.  They’ve always mailed them.  It was too late to call so, wearing my worry like a leaden coat, I went to bed.  After tossing and turning all night, wondering if it was diabetes…  cholesterol…  or the Big ‘C’ (which has reared its ugly head in my immediate family).  After what seemed like hours waiting to be transferred to the nurse, her pulling my file, and giving me the verdict.
“Ms. Richardson, your Vitamin D levels are low.”
Ok, that was NOT what I expected.   And, I guiltily admit, what’s the big deal?  Why are they stressing me over this? I never really heard much about Vitamin D.
Just later that day, my friend called to say Dr. Oz was featuring it on his show.  Taking this 10-cent a-day pill helps prevent 20+ diseases, allows the body to properly process calcium, helps prevents diabetes, helps prevents depression, and aids in weight loss.  Hmm…. Ok, I was wrong.  It was a big deal.
As I took my prescribed Vitamin D3 booster pill, I got to thinking about all my quilting buds. Indoors.  Quilting through the winter.  The most effective means of getting your daily requirements of vitamin D is sunlight, and, studies show, we Americans don’t get enough.

So, to make sure you’re around for years to come, get yourself tested.  Take your Vitamin D pills (more in winter).  And, every once in awhile, shut down that sewing machine for a few minutes and get some sun.  I’ll join you.

*Disclaimer: I don't work for any pharmeceutical company.  Follow your doctor's daily vitamin recommendations.  Use caution with the sun as it does cause skin cancer.  Take all proper precautions and remember that prevention is a lot easier than maintenance!

  1. Thanks for the advice about vitamin D. I work outside (I'm a mail lady), so I think I'm okay. I hate the fact that you had to wait to hear what was up. Waiting is always the worst. Found your blog when I was checking out another blog. Love it! :)

  2. I heard about vitamin D a few years ago when Dr. Oz was on Oprah and I've taken one every day since! :0)

  4. Vitamin D is very important - I take 4000 IU per day in winter, 1-2000 per day in summer. Calcium too. I read a book called The Vitamin D Cure [got it at the library] and it really shocked me.
